The firm is deferring a number of its September 2009 and September 2010 trainees and in some cases cancelling training contracts.
But despite outrage sparked by the story, which saw a number of trainees launch a petition against the firm, future joiners Tom Goff and George Roberts have defended the firm’s actions, claiming that in the absence of any financial buoy trainees will be “supporting each other in more practical ways”.
In a joint statement to Lawyer2B.com, the duo said: “In spite of the bad news, we’re committed to our firm, and we’re resolved to rise to the challenge of succeeding in these tough times together.”
Nicholas Dalgleish, who is due to start with the firm in September 2010 after being deferred, has also rallied behind Shoosmiths’ decision.
“While I’m disappointed to be deferred, I can only look forward to the time when I start my training contract,” he said. “I wouldn’t consider moving to a different firm.”
