Milberg accused of greasing palms

Milberg Weiss Bershad Hynes & Lerach, the firm that The Lawyer last week revealed had been selected to lead the claims against Enron and Arthur Andersen, is the subject of a federal investigation

Federal and Pennsylvania authorities are assessing whether Philadelphia City Controller Jonathan Saidel was paid consulting fees from the US firm in exchange for helping it win city contracts.
According to San Francisco newspaper The Recorder, an email was circulated around the firm stating that a Pennsylvania grand jury has requested documents relating to Saidel and the mother-daughter lawyers who run Milberg's Philadelphia office, Sandra and Laura Stein. Duane Morris partner Michael Baylson is representing the firm. All parties are understood to have denied the allegations and Milberg has not even worked for the city.
Milberg is already the subject of an apparently unrelated Los Angeles grand jury probe into its business practices, including whether financial inducements were used to drum up business. Baylson was unavailable to comment.
