Merger negotiations are a tricky business and can, quite understandably, take a not inconsiderable amount of time.
But why do you suppose that late January often heralds the news of the conclusion of a succession of negotiations to sign up either firms or partners in Mediterranean climes?
A couple of weeks ago, for example, it was announced that Norton Rose was to open in Greece, while just last week Linklaters announced that it has signed up a five-partner firm in Portugal.
Tulkinghorn wonders whether the timing has anything to do with the fact that this means the negotiations had to take place over winter.
