Marriott GC quits for private practice

Top in-house corporate counsel Joseph Ryan from Marriott International has been snapped up by Venable as a partner in its Washington DC office.

Ryan, executive vice president and general counsel with Marriott International, joins the firm on 18 December.

He spent 12 years at Marriott, where he headed up a law department of 85 attorneys, while overseeing the offices of corporate secretary, government affairs and corporate communications.

Ryan, who has worked closely with Venable on a number of transactions, said in a statement: “Although I wasn’t certain about returning to private practice, the decision to join Venable was a natural one, given my successful working relationship with the firm while at Marriott and the advantage of having seen first-hand the high calibre of attorneys there in so many practice areas.”

Last year, Venable was ranked 86 in America’s Top 100 Law Firms, reporting revenue of $239.5m and average revenue per partner of $590,000.
