Hunton & Williams: The London eye

The London eye

Dearbhla Quigley’s promotion at the London office of US firm Hunton & Williams is further evidence that its good to be a woman in corporate.

But it’s also evidence that when it comes to an ability to predict the future, Mystic Meg’s got nothing on The Lawyer.

Three years ago we identified ‘bright and hard-working’ Quigley in our Hot 100 of up-and-coming lawyers as having a ‘pivotal role’ in helping the firm build its AIM practice, which has since become a flagshig offering.

Come 2008 and what do you know? Quigley is the only lawyer outside the US to join the Hunton partnership.

In fact, ‘outside the US’ hasn’t generally fared that well in Huntons’ promotions recently.

Last year the firm made up 20, every one of them on Yankee soil. This year that number nearly halved to 11, and Quigley was the only lucky associate across the firm’s four bases in Europe and Asia.

Hunton’s London-based European managing partner, Martin Thomas, says tellingly that Hunton is ‘very focussed’ on its office in the capital, which currently has capability in banking, corporate, employment, energy, outsourcing and tax.

Don’t be surprised if that list expands soon. Just remember you read it here first.
