Winter’s sports

Evidence that some of the lawyers at the increasingly profitable Taylor Wessing have skills that go beyond the merely legal was provided to one of Tulkinghorn’s hacks last Friday (21 July).

As regular readers will know, senior partner Martin Winter is a seriously expert waterskier. Indeed, his whole family appear to have taken up residence in the Great Britain waterskiing team.

For several years, Winter has hosted an annual waterskiing day at the Thorpe Waterski centre near Chertsey. Novices and experts alike get the chance to test their abilities with a boat and a rope. This time, Winter was reckless enough to widen the group to include a true waterskiing novice; a hack from The Lawyer.

For once, the great quantity of liquid imbibed by the hack was entirely non-alcoholic; indeed it was almost exclusively lake water. Elsewhere Taylor Wessing partner Justin Webb, Regeneration Holdings director Paul Fincken and corporate silk David Chivers QC of Erskine Chambers had all managed to strut their considerable stuff.

But it was Winter himself who took the plaudits for raising walls of spray at hair-raising speeds, James Bond style. Winter, it appears, really can walk on water.
