Former MTV legal duo bag News Corp, Arsenal posts

Two alumni of MTV Europe’s legal team have landed new jobs in recent weeks, with Andrea Appella taking a role at News Corporation and Svenja Geissmar becoming Arsenal FC’s first general counsel.

Appella, who was most recently head of international at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), has joined News Corporation in the newly created role of director of legal, competition and regulatory affairs for Europe and Asia.

Appella began his career as a solicitor in Herbert Smith’s competition department before taking on the role of legal counsel and business affairs manager at MTV Networks Europe. Prior to joining the OFT Appella worked in the legal departments at Warner Bros and Time Warner Europe.

Geissmar has spent the past three years working as a legal consultant after her previous time at MTV Networks Europe, where she was promoted to general counsel in 1997.

As revealed by The Lawyer earlier this year (11 May), Arsenal began its hunt for an in-house lawyer in May .

The football club has never previously employed an in-house lawyer, using Slaughter and May for all its legal needs. The firm advises on both corporate and transfer activity.

A growing number of Premier League clubs are now employing full-time lawyers. In April this year Manchester City hired Shearman & Sterling corporate associate Simon Cliff as its head of legal.
