CMS Cameron McKenna last acted for Legoland in the early 1990s on the construction of its Windsor theme park. But personnel on both sides have changed since then, and this time it was Camerons’ expertise in the two-stage tender approach that was key to its appointment by Legoland Development in California. Marc Hanson, senior construction solicitor, won the work after a recommendation from cost consultants Davis Langdon & Everest.
The two-stage procurement process means that contractors can be brought in before the design is finished, and a contract price can be fixed, making it ideal for the fast-track programme Legoland wanted for the German park. The approach has become popular with property developers in the UK during the past three years, but is virtually unknown in Germany, hence the decision to appoint a UK firm as lead adviser.
Camerons has used the technique for a number of clients, including Chelsfield, Greycoat and most recently for Prudential in the pre-letting of GreenPark, Reading.
