A consultant ophthalmologist from Stevenage, who claims he became the victim of an orchestrated campaign by Welwyn-based East Hertfordshire NHS Trust to discredit him, has launched a £400,000 plus High Court claim against the trust. Bachittar Singh Sandhu claims in his writ that he was suspended from his duties in October 1990, threatened with dismissal, and not fully re-established until 1995. During that time, he claims he lost private practice income of £221,497 and will lose another £219,000 while he re-establishes his practice. He accuses the trust of embarking on, and permitting another ophthalmologist to orchestrate, a campaign calculated to discredit him and his professional competence, and intended to prevent his return to work.
