The insurance litigation specialist beat five other firms to win the work under the Labour Government's Best Value Initiative.
Ian Fisher, legal services manager at Lancashire County Council, says Cobbetts and Hill Dickinson were among the six firms that bid for the work.
Fisher says: “We were looking at various ways of commissioning work. The overall concern is that the county council is getting best value for money.”
While the firm will be working closely with the council's 10-15 strong team of claims handlers and litigation lawyers, Fisher says that Berrymans will share the work with Eversheds.
Eversheds is representing the council in a large multi-party action involving alleged child abuse in council care homes – work for which Berrymans also put in a bid.
But Fisher says: “They have the people they could apply to it straight away.”
The contract will be reviewed on an ongoing basis but Fisher says it is difficult to determine how much the work is worth since it is handed out when a case arises.
