Freshfields boosts Dutch tax in London

A senior Dutch tax partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer‘s Amsterdam office is moving to London to bolster the Dutch tax service to investment banks in the UK.

Dick Hofland will join Dutch tax associate Eelco van der Stok, who has been on secondment with the London tax group since early 2000. The move is aimed mainly at the sophisticated tax needs of the investment banks, many of which have existing relationships with Freshfields.

Co-leader of the international tax group Roger Berner, who is based in Amsterdam, says: “This could be done here, but in this area, where we’re dealing with structured financial products, there’s a lot of brainstorming involved, which is best done face to face. We’re sure there is client demand there and we think it’s better for clients to have the adviser on their doorstep. Eelco had a defined objective to service clients in the London market requiring Dutch tax advice. That has been so successful that it needs greater capacity.”

The Amsterdam office is expected to gain a significant amount of work as a result of the move.
