MARTIN Mears has been blamed by the Legal Action Group for transforming events at Chancery Lane into a “farcical soap opera”.
The Law Society president is lambasted in the leading article of the March issue of Legal Action, the pressure group's magazine, which calls for Mears and his deputy Robert Sayer to be overthrown.
“The joke played by the Law Society membership on its leadership has gone sour,” says the article, which argues that the society is in danger of losing the credibility it has won in recent years pursuing a policy of “enlightened self-interest”.
The article attacks the “narrow, self-interested” policies currently being pursued by Mears and suggests: “It is surely time for the men and the women in suits to emerge from the smoke-filled rooms or for some grassroots resistance movement to develop.”
