The fashion department at Elle magazine come up with some suggestions for those wishing to dress with style.

There is no single set look this season, and overall the look is quite flexible. Trouser suits are in, with a slim jacket and kick-flare trousers. Skirts are either really short or really long – again, this is quite flexible.

Colour-wise, quite strong citrus colours are 'in' (essentially looking forward to summer), such as orange, lime and white.

Silhouette-wise, the look is slim rather than fitted, and definitely not shoulder pads.

Shirts are definitely 'in', usually plain – although summery prints are also becoming fashionable – and quite tight. Stretch-jersey shirts are also something to watch for.

A black jersey shirt-dress is ideal both during and after office hours.

Established designers such as Calvin Klein and Donna Karan, especially her jackets and skirts, are the designers you can't go wrong with (and check out Harvey Nichols).

As for accessories, belts are being worn almost as an alternative to jewellery – jewellery is 'sort of out'.

Shoulder bags with a short strap are 'in' – any colour.

For shoes try square-toes with quite a low block heel – Russell & Bromley is recommended.
