The Legal Aid Board's annual report shows gross payments rose during 1998/9 to £1.73bn from £1.67bn in the previous 12 months. Chief executive Steve Orchard says the figure will continue to rise because of “all the work in the system”. Invitations to bid for contracts go out this week and have to be returned by 13 August.
