US?litigation?firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges is looking to recruit barristers as well as solicitors to staff its nascent City office.
The firm, which specialises in bringing litigation against major financial institutions, will launch in London under former Kirkland & Ellis restructuring and litigation partner Richard East in the coming weeks.
East, who is qualified as a solicitor-advocate, argued that, due to the nature of the work Quinn Emanuel focuses on, it can offer an interesting stream of work to?barristers?seeking alternative career paths. “Quinn Emanuel offers a slightly different proposition to barristers who might want to move into a firm,” he said. “In chambers barristers operate a pretty autonomous practice with a good flow of interesting work and aren’t bothered by conflicts.
“The problem with going into a firm is that there’s less prospect of doing advocacy because firms will often be conflicted from doing the interesting stuff. Quinn Emanuel?can?offer?a conflict-free environ-ment, so there’ll be a good flow of interesting work.”
The firm aims to have 15 lawyers based in London in the next six months, with recruits coming from law firms and the bar.
Los?Angeles-based partner Bill Urquhart said the firm will focus on providing magic circle equivalent advice on issues the magic circle will not advise on.
“A few years ago we decided to sever our ties with major financial institutions so we could bring suits against them,” he said.
In the US the firm has brought cases against the likes of Citigroup, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs.
