Heller chairman finds a home at Dechert

Heller chairman finds a home at <a class=Dechert” />The final chairman of Heller Ehrman, the US West Coast-based firm which dissolved last month, has joined Dechert in San Francisco.

Matt Larrabee guided Heller through its final two years of operation but is a litigation lawyer by trade and it is in this guise that he joins Dechert.

Dechert chairman Bart Winokur said: “Matt’s experience is unusually diverse, with each of his practice areas intersecting with a number of Dechert’s core litigation practices: class action defense, antitrust, fraud claims, and complex commercial litigation.”

Larrabee led the firm through launches in London and Shanghai and instituted a massive overhaul of the partnership that ultimately led to a procession of partners leaving the firm. While some people hold him responsible for the decline of Heller, there are others who believe he was dealt a bad hand.

The latter believe Larrabee inherited a difficult situation from the previous management and had to restructure the firm.

“It was not his fault that it was too little too late,” said a source close to the situation.

With a litigation career spanning more than 25 years, Larrabee has served as lead counsel for a variety of companies and financial institutions from the financial services, software, pharmaceutical and health care sectors in multifaceted disputes. His practice has included consumer class actions, private antitrust litigation, false claims act disputes, and other complex commercial litigation.
