The credit crunch may still be raging, but luckily for Cheshire firm Gorvins Solicitors this has not dented people’s desire to get divorced.
To the contrary, the 42-lawyer firm’s divorce team has reported an upturn in work over the past few months. With around 150 staff, Gorvins has one of the biggest private client workbooks outside London and has been quietly growing in competition with Manchester firms. The firm also has an office in Milton Keynes that does mostly private client work, largely with the police.
Gorvins managing partner Lorraine Lockie presides over an eight-person equity partnership, which includes five people under the age of 40.
While Lockie and her team are happy to service private client divorce cases for now, they are under no illusion that the situation will last. “We’re waiting for that switch when people become stuck in relationships and can’t afford to divorce because money is tied up in their house and assets,” she says.
But Lockie can count on the work brought in from police federations by matrimonial partner Amanda McAlister.
Gorvin’s commercial property practice did well in the last financial year (which ends in November), and despite the obvious shortage of work now, the firm is using some of that success to press ahead with a planned expansion, including the hire of one junior, one partner and one equity partner – Andrew Curwen from Manchester firm Rowe Cohen.
In keeping with its modern attitude, Gorvins is also adding to this list of new faces by hiring a business development manager in November.
“We’ve bought in lateral hires to help attract high net worth clients to our private client team,” says Lockie. “It’s more important than ever to keep progressing. We want our staff to be positive about the direction in which the firm is going.”
