Lawrence Davies was born in Oxford on 30 July 1966. He now lives in London and is solicitor advocate at the North Lambeth Law Centre.

What was your first job?

Research assistant at the Law Commission.

What was your first ever salary as a lawyer?

£16,000 (McKenna & Co).

What would you have done if you hadn't become a lawyer?

Been a writer. But nothing is exclusive, so I write as well.

Which law could you live without?

The two-year qualifying period in unfair dismissal cases.

What was your most embarrassing professional moment?

Being asked repeatedly by a female interviewer at a City firm on Lincoln's Inn Fields whether I enjoyed "having it off", ie "taking a year off".

What car do you drive?

None at present.

Which famous person would you like to go out with?

Anyone who did not want to be famous.

Where would you go to eat?

Somewhere quiet.

What's the best thing on TV?

The Simpsons and The X Files.

Which movie do you wish you'd appeared in?

Breathless (Goddard).

What's your most often-worn piece of clothing?

Jeans.

What piece of advice would you give to anyone entering the profession now?

Don't lose yourself in work.
