Injuries: Widow's claim over death of husband. Marcel Beadle, 40, underwent surgery to reduce obesity, but complications which followed resulted in his death. Liability and causation admitted. Dead man's daughter who was four at time of her father's death to receive £15,000.

Fox v Ministry of Defence – QBD 20 January 1997
Claimant: Terence Fox, 2Incident: Road traffic accident during military exercise
Injuries: Claimant, a former sailor, suffered head injuries in road accident during a training exercise in north Africa after vehicle he was travelling in plunged into ditch. Prior to accident he had prospects of successful career with either the Royal Navy or the Royal Marines. Severe head injuries, which included fractures of the skull resulted in significant brain damage. Claimant was unconscious for two months and now has major physical and psychological disabilities. He now suffers from right-sided paralysis, poor balance, disturbance of speech, impairment of memory and personality changes. Prior to accident he had been an exceptional rugby player but had chosen the services rather than rugby as a career. Liability had been admitted.

Wogan v Hatton – QBD 14 January 1997
Claimant: Mary Wogan, Incident: Road traffic accident
Injuries: Pedestrian, a spinster, knocked down by a van and received a fractured skull and brain damage. She is now classified as incapable of managing her own affairs and is in residential care but supported by her family.
