Latham & Watkins has ramped up its European presence with five star hires from Italian corporate powerhouse Bonelli Erede Pappalardo.

Former Bonelli finance partner Andrea Novarese and M&A partners Maria Cristina Storchi, Fabio Coppola, Tommaso Amirante and Simone Monesi increase the total number of partners in Latham’s Milan office from one to six.

Latham Italian practice head Michael Immordino said: “This is a big deal for us and it will significantly shape the firm and our presence in Europe.

“Bonelli is one of the best, if not the best, Italian law firms, so gaining these lawyers is a big win.”

Immordino added that expansion of the Milan office is a high priority for Latham, which now has local law capabilities as a result of the recent hires.

“Latham’s strategy is to have a strong presence in all key financial centres in the world,” he said. “These hires are just one step in building a successful team in Italy.

Earlier this year (14 September) The Lawyer reported that Linklaters swooped on Slaughter and May best friend Bonelli, hiring corporate partner Luca Picone to bolster its Italian corporate practice.

Bonelli managing partner Alberto Saravalle said: “Partner moves are quite common for a large law firm like ours. We thank them for their contribution to Bonelli’s success.”
