Davis Polk loses NY star to Freshfields London office

Freshfields Bruckhaus Derringer has bolstered its London restructuring and insolvency capability with the star hire of Nick Segal from the New York office of Davis Polk & Wardwell.

Segal, who made the unusual move to join Davis Polk from the London office of Allen & Overy in 2003, is understood to be returning to the UK due to family reasons. He will join Freshfields’ in mid-August.

At the time of joining Davis Polk in 2003, Segal was the firm’s first UK qualified partner. He had previously been a partner in A&O’s London restructuring practice for 15 years.

A spokesman for Davis Polk said that, as the firm does not practice English law, “it was impractical to expect Nick to participate in our New York-based US law insolvency practice from our London office”.

In a statement the firm said: “Nick is an excellent lawyer, and has done superb work during his time at the firm. We regret losing him as a colleague and wish him continued success in his career.”

Segal specialises in insolvency and restructuring matters. His experience includes being involved in the restructuring of, and subsequent bid for, the Heron Group; the US$1bn restructuring of Thai Telecom and Telecommunications, and the restructuring of the Telewest Communications Group.

Co-senior partner of Freshfields, Konstantin Mettenheimer, said: “It is rare that a lawyer of Nick’s calibre becomes available and his extensive international experience, particularly in working for creditors, will complement our existing restructuring practice.”
