St Philip's Chambers builds on core strengths with triple gain

Birmingham set St Philip's Chambers has hired three tenants from a rival chambers in a bid to strengthen its core practice areas.

The three tenants leaving 6 Fountain Court Chambers will join today (26 February). Senior insolvency practitioner and recorder Avtar Khangure will join the existing insolvency team and will become the team's sole tenant of more than 10-years call; Professional negligence expert James Quirke joins the chancery and commercial team, bringing the count to 34; Simon Davis joins the criminal practice.

And Lorna Findlay is returning to the 20-strong employment team after two years at the Royal College of Nursing's in-house department.

Chief executive Paul Wilson, the former corporate development manager of Royal Bank of Scotland's Birmingham office, succeeded Vincent Denham last month. He is confident that the £3.3m premises will provide a platform for further growth.

Wilson says: "Having moved to the new building we are now in a position to start focusing on growing our core business across our six practice groups. These four outstanding individuals will contribute to our long-term development."

Khangure, who has a strong commercial litigation and corporate insolvency practice is believed to have been attracted by the strong practice of chancery and commercial silk John Randall QC and commercial litigator Alistair Wyvill.

Practice director Tony McDaid at rival 5 Fountain Court says: "It's a real coup for St Philip's to have taken on Avtar Khangure. Had we known that he was unhappy with his present set we would most certainly have been interested in talking to him ourselves."

McDaid hinted that the set was looking to add to its personal injury and clinical negligence group due to an increase in work.

Khangure says: "I have worked with John Randall QC and members of the St Philip's chancery and commercial team on many occasions and felt that if I moved that would be my natural destination."
