Allen & Overy (A&O) boasts a long and proud tradition. So does Spitalfields, the East End location that the firm is relocating to.

It seems A&O’s leaders might have borne that tradition in mind when deciding on their new office location. Take this from the Tower Hamlets Borough website: “The area is historically famous for providing refuge to those fleeing persecution.” Coincidence? Perhaps, but it’s an irony not lost on us.

And don’t forget that Tower Hamlets is the poorest borough in England. A&O’s presence will lift the borough’s average income into the stratosphere.

Bizarrely, BT refused to transfer the firm’s 0207 prefix, claiming it had “run out”, and instead saddled the firm with the new 0203 prefix. According to one partner, everyone’s scared that clients won’t be able to find A&O’s number. So much for just One New Change.Get the latest news and an irreverent commentary delivered to your desktop every Wednesday by subscribing to Lawyer News Weekly.
