Careers: In brief

The Law Society last week welcomed plans for the implementation of the Clementi reforms to enable new forms of legal practice and external investment in law firms. The society warned that it was important that the new regulatory framework should not lead to disproportionate regulatory burdens on the legal profession. “The legal profession has an important role in standing up for individuals against the state and defending the rule of law generally,” said Law Society president Kevin Martin. “The new regulatory arrangements need to respect the importance of having an independent legal profession. This means that the composition of the Legal Services Board should be demonstrably independent of government and the board should operate with a light touch.”
