At a time when many overseas firms are cutting back their London presence, Australia’s Mallesons Stephen Jaques is bulking up its corporate and finance teams in the City with the hire and transfer of four new lawyers to its office.

Following the move of banking and finance partner Ken Astridge to London from Sydney at the end of last year, the firm has now taken on Allen & Overy banking and finance assistant Nathan Parker, and has transferred two senior associates from Australia.

The firm’s London client base is split roughly fifty-fifty between UK and Australian clients. London managing partner Tim Blue said: “Mallesons is committed to building its London presence.” He added that the addition of Astridge and Parker would provide increased benefits for clients seeking both regional and English law input for complex transactions.

The office has recently acted on deals for Citibank and Barclays, and is advising Insurance Australia group on its A$1.86bn (£706m) acquisition of the CGU and NZI general insurance business from UK parent company Aviva.
