Wragge & Co's demotion by Rover provides a sobering lesson for many firms. The car giant was so swept off its feet by Wragges' regional rival Eversheds, because of the work it did for Phoenix, that it has switched its affections.
More than anything else the move indicates how important it is for firms to become less dependent on their traditional client base.
Wragges has already established that process over a number of years. Winning blue-chip clients such as BA and developing its IT/IP business are all part of the renewal process. If Rover had done this 10 years ago it might have been a very different story indeed.
