Like the song, The Lawyer Rising 50 is coming around again. Next month, The Lawyer publishes its annual collection of the 50 largest firms by revenue outside the top 100.

The figures this year will confirm that the firms in this group, though smaller than their top 100 rivals, are at least as vibrant and in many cases a sight more dynamic.

The activity in this sector reveals just how competitive it is among firms with turnovers that last year ranged from around £10m to almost £17m.

From Tarlo Lyons, which is completing its merger with Blake Lapthorn Linnell, to Ledingham Chalmers (now predominantly part of McGrigors), Henderson Boyd Jackson (now merged with Gateley Wareing) and Birmingham’s Putsmans (soon to be married to Shakespeares).

All of these firms will be in The Lawyer’s top 100 next year, one way or another.

For other firms, such as Fennemores, which dissolved earlier this year, the past 12 months have been just as dynamic, but maybe less kind.

The Rising 50 is an invaluable guide to firms that may have a lower profile, but are just as much in play. And yes, you could find your next merger partner here.
