Variety is the spice of life

Exactly how raucous can a bunch of lawyers get? Top marks to Allen & Overy, whose table enlivened an already rumbustious evening at the Variety Club's inaugural legal gastronomic event at The Dorchester last week. And top marks to Salans Hertzfeld & Heilbronn's Lionel Rosenblatt, who managed to persuade a whole slew of top chefs, including Antonio Carluccio and Michel Roux, to contribute a course each. Tulkinghorn rather liked the deep-fried snail concocted by the newly Michelin-starred Daniel Clifford of Midsummer House in Cambridge.
The event raised thousands for disabled and disadvantaged children, though Tulkinghorn was stunned at how frenzied the bidding was for the Destiny's Child platinum disc. Rumours that the winning bidder had been under the alcoholic impression that he was going to meet the three R'n'B lovelies are of course unfounded.
