WELL-KNOWN sports lawyer Mel Stein has been acquitted of mail fraud and money laundering charges by a New Orleans court.
Stein, consultant at London firm Finers, avoided extradition when he flew out to the US to face the charges along with a US lawyer a month ago. The US lawyer was also acquitted.
He had been implicated in the case of one of his former clients, Cuban businessman Carlos Miro, who was jailed after the collapse of the Anglo-American Insurance Company.
Stein was acquitted by the federal district court following a three-week trial.
Finers managing partner David Swede says: “We are all delighted that Mel has been exonerated, as we always expected he would be.
“Mel and his family have been under extreme pressure for the last year and a half. Mel has been unwell and unable to work,” says Swede.
