Chambers’ summer parties are an important part of the Bar calendar for two reasons: barristers can get their clients drunk and clerks can show off the scale of their entertainment budget to other clerks.

The picture above is the result of such a summer party, with the raucous 39 Essex Street the host.

Apparently a man strapped to a catherine wheel was the appropriate backdrop for the boozing and schmoozing.

Tulkinghorn cannot confirm the rumours flying around that the person in question is a pupil going through a traditional 39 Essex Street hazing ceremony.
