Judge Adrian Smith sent a 15-year-old girl with no previous convictions to Styal prison in Cheshire for six months after accidentally burning down a community centre. The girl, together with five other youngsters, set fire to cardboard and placed it in a bin near the centre run by the Church of England Children's Society. While the judge accepted that the resulting fire had been an accident and the Children's Society have now forgiven her, he told her: 'I appreciate this was not a deliberate and malicious attack of arson but it was a case of reckless and dangerous playing with fire,' adding that a non-custodial sentence would send out entirely the wrong message.
