Legislation in waiting. Asylum Bill

The Asylum and Immigration Bill, to be published imminently, will toughen up laws on asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants. The Government has received strong Labour criticism for playing the “race card” before the general election, but ministers defended it saying the surge of asylum applications meant this year's figure was likely to reach 40,000, excluding dependents. The most controversial proposal is the planned creation of a “white list” of safe countries.
