DLA Piper blasts competition in lateral hiring stakes

DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, Halliwells, Linklaters and Taylor Wessing have emerged as the biggest lateral hirers of any UK firms, according to The Lawyer Career Report 2006, out today.

DLA Piper has hired 123 lawyers into partnership in three years – more than the next three firms put together. Taylor Wessing has made 40 laterals, Linklaters 38 and Halliwells 35. DLA Piper’s lateral figures cover a sustained period of expansion internationally, including its numerous raids on the dissolved Coudert Brothers and its annexation of EY Law’s CIS practice. In 2005 it hired no fewer than 75 partners.

The firm scoring the highest number of internal promotions over three years was Linklaters with 82. Clifford Chance was second with 79.

However, US firms come out badly on internal promotions in London. The best was White & Case, which made up nine to partner – the same number as Farrer & Co and Ince & Co. McDermott Will & Emery was second with seven, followed by Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft with six.
