CC named in property negligence claim

Clifford Chance is the latest City firm to be the subject of a professional negligence claim, with Jersey property company Al Salam UK Properties Investment taking action against the firm.

The company claims that Clifford Chance repeatedly ignored its instructions on the purchase of two Mayfair properties it intended to develop.

The claimant’s firm Nasir & Co has outlined a series of allegations against Clifford Chance partner Michael Edwards and a former trainee.

According to a Nasir & Co spokeswoman, the allegations are that Clifford Chance was “negligent in a number of respects in handling the purchase of two properties for development”.

It is alleged that the firm failed to make any attempt to negotiate the terms of the freehold deal until more than a year after it had been instructed to do so by the client. It is further alleged that the deal took two and a half years to complete, when it could have completed within a year.

The news comes as a professional negligence case brought against Linklaters by Baltic telecoms company Levicom got underway in the High Court last week.

The company is seeking damages for advice Linklaters gave on a dispute with Tele2.

In March Hammonds will defend a claim from former client Albert Abela alleging deceit and bribery involving a former Hammonds partner.

Clifford Chance, which declined to comment, has instructed Barlow Lyde & Gilbert.
