Doughty Street Chambers human rights barrister Edward Fitzgerald QC has won his second case this year, challenging the Home Secretary. The Lords ruled that the Home Secretary can no longer fix the tariff of a mandatory life sentence for murder. Doughty Street’s Fitzgerald and Phillippa Kaufmann acted for the appellants. The ruling means all tariffs must be made openly and fairly by the judiciary. First revealed on www.thelawyer.com/lawyernews on 27 November
