Tulkinghorn can reveal that Allen & Overy (A&O) lawyers have suffered an embarrassing defeat. Was it to magic circle rivals in a beauty parade? Were they dumped off a panel, to be replaced by lawyers from a cheaper, more responsive regional firm? Did they lose a case in the Court of Appeal? Oh no – this is something much more embarrassing.
At last week's annual firm-wide quiz night, more than 30 teams of lawyers and support staff gathered to battle it out to prove who was the general knowledge supremo. But frankly, shame on them. Not one team of A&O lawyers could muster sufficient information on the latest goings-on in EastEnders to challenge for the prize. It transpires that the runaway winners were a team of document checkers. Attention to detail is perhaps no longer a lawyer's strength, at least not when you can employ someone else to do it for you.
