EU prepares for class action impact

The EU is considering new rules that could see class action-style suits being fought in Europe. Meglena Kuneva, the European Commissioner for Consumer Protection, said last week that measures could allow individuals and consumer bodies in different member states to band together to pursue collective reparation. The EU has asked parties, including law firms, to help assess the likely impact of the proposals and report back on their findings. Lovells product liability partner Rod Freeman said: “If this happened it would result in an unprecedented system of international cooperation in the field of consumer protection.”
