Berwin Leighton managing partner Bernard Bartlett has had to step down after a partner vote which saw the election of Robert Jones (right), 47-year-old head of the corporate department, as managing partner. Bartlett was appointed managing partner in April 1994 after a streamlining of the management structure. Jones, a corporate partner, has been at Berwin Leighton for 21 years and was appointed corporate head two years ago. Asked if Bartlett had been voted out, Jones, a corporate partner, said: “We have elections on a regular basis; it's a bit harsh to say Bernard was voted out. It's democracy at work.” The new corporate department managing partner will be John Bennett; his position as property department managing partner will be taken by David Taylor. Berwin Leighton has also appointed two specialists to its construction litigation practice. Tom Deacons joins from the construction division of Trafalgar House, where he was head of litigation, and Steven Williams from Frere Cholmeley Bischoff, where he specialised in construction litigation.
