Simmons strengthens Italy with Bisconti raid

Simmons & Simmons has raided Milan firm Studio Legale Bisconti as it continues to bulk up its Italian practice following the departures of former name partner Eugenio Grippo and 10 other lawyers a year ago

Corporate partner Massimo Chiaia has joined from seven-partner Bisconti. Chiaia has a particular focus on corporate finance, insurance, utilities and multi-utilities.
Simmons has also taken on Omnitel Vodafone in-house lawyer Riccardo Papetti as a senior corporate and commercial associate.
Chiaia commented: “I'm delighted to be joining Simmons & Simmons. I look forward to working with my new colleagues in Italy, some of whom I have known personally for many years.”
The appointments continue Simmons' efforts to strengthen its Italian practice after losing Grippo and the 10 other lawyers to Linklaters ally Gianni Origoni & Partners in 2001.
London partner Alan Carter relocated to Milan, and early this year Simmons merged with its two-partner Paduan ally, bringing Paolo Brugnera and Paolo Gnignati, along with five other lawyers, on board. It also set up an Italian desk in London. Simmons now has 15 partners in Italy, split between Milan, Rome and Padua.
