DWF raids Weightmans for six insurance partners

DWF has snared a six-partner insurance team from regional rival Weightmans for its fledgling London office.

Head of Weightmans’ London office Mark Whittaker has given six months notice along with Innes Ebert, Perry Hill, Seema Jobanputra, Dan Mitchell and Carys Oatham.

This comes as a blow for Weightmans which recently invested in new larger offices in the City for its 90 staff.

Weightmans managing partner Patrick Gaul said: “They’ve given in their notice, which we’ve accepted. We’ve got lots of plans for London and those plans will continue. London will be thriving and up on is feet in a very short time.”

Senior partner Ian Evans has taken over the job of running the London office in the interim and Gaul said that Weightmans was in the process of speaking to possible candidates for the position and considering its options.

The team, which covers personal injury, employer’s liability and property damage among other areas is a coup for DWF, which established its London office in June of this year.

DWF launched through taking on board a catastrophic injury duo from Davies Lavery following that firm’s merger with Kennedys (The Lawyer, 20 June.)

DWF’s managing partner Andrew Leaitherland said: “These latest appointments are in line with our plans to grow our insurance practice in the capital and further strengthen our capability at a national level.

“They will also help us to build our expertise in local authority-related insurance work. DWF already act for 23 local authorities. The skills that these partners bring will enable us to cross sell additional services to our client base.”

The six Weightmans partners were all either unavailable or declined to comment.
