Iain Milligan QC’s 20 Essex Street has taken on the former president of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias as an arbitrator.
Rodríguez Iglesias, a professor of international law at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, will be a member of chambers but only spend part of his time in London.
When asked why, as a high-profile former judge, he did not join a Spanish law firm as a consultant, Rodríguez Iglesias said he did not think it was appropriate for former judges to work for law firms.
“I didn’t… want to work for a law firm as I don’t think
such work is appropriate for a former judge and president of the ECJ, whereas arbitration is,” he said.
But he had not thought of becoming an arbitrator until 20 Essex Street presented him with the opportunity.
The set is also taking on Michael Pryles as an arbitrator. He is one of three nominated by the Australian Government for the ICSID arbitrators panel.
