Arab news channel Al Jazeera has raided telecoms group Colt for a senior in-house lawyer.
Raja Sharif, who has worked in Colt’s group legal function for one and a half years, is leaving the company to join Al Jazeera as legal adviser to the news channel’s director general Wadah Qhanfar later this month. The role will be based in Qatar.
Al Jazeera already has two UK-qualified and three Qatari in-house lawyers based in the company’s Doha headquarters. However, it is understood that Sharif will sit outside the in-house legal team.
The news channel does not currently have any formal relationships with external lawyers.
Prior to joining Colt Sharif worked as an in-house lawyer in BT’s global services division.
Al Jazeera is the world’s first global English news channel to be broadcast from the Middle East.
Sharif confirmed the move but declined to comment further.
