A record number of students were admitted as solicitors in 1997, with more than 5,400 gaining practising certificates, according to Law Society research. The Research and Policy Planning Unit also shows that the number of women being admitted in the past decade has increased by 166 per cent with females now accounting for the majority of admissions.
