Shaw replaces former deputy general counsel Judith Shepherd, who became general counsel of Barclays Global Retail and Commercial Bank last year.
“In-house is a very different role from private practice,” said Barclays general counsel Mark Harding. “We were looking for someone who has good deal of general advisory experience. Michael’s strong corporate background means he’ll be working on any corporate-related deals.”
While at Herbert Smith Shaw had close ties with energy group EDF. In 2008 he and energy partner Mark Newbury led a team advising EDF on its £12.5bn acquisition of a nuclear power generator from British Energy (The Lawyer, 24 September 2008).
