Action for Victims of Medical Accidents (Avma) group is backing a new specialist solicitor medical negligence insurance scheme.
The scheme, which is being launched this week, was devised by insurance company Litigation Protection.
It provides up to £100,000 of cover for opponent's costs, own side's disbursements and counsel's fees, plus indemnity for expert witness fees where the case is lost.
Litigation Protection managing director Brian Raincock said: “Medical negligence cases have been a particularly difficult area for the Legal Aid Board.
“I believe our conditional fee approach could relieve some of the pressure, as well as improving access to justice for the many sufferers whose losses are currently irrecoverable.”
The scheme took a year to design after Litigation Protection contacted Avma last year.
Arnold Simanowitz, Avma's chief executive, said: “We work closely with community health councils and are recognised by the medical profession as a responsible voice on behalf of victims.
“Our experience will help to ensure that cases covered by the insurance are worthy of investigation, and litigation, if necessary.”
