Tooting-based St George's Healthcare NHS Trust is being sued by hospital consultant Michael Whitelaw, for more than u87,000 which he claims it owes him in unpaid salary. Whitelaw worked at St George's as a consultant in geriatric medicine and senior lecturer from November 1985. He claims that in June 1992 after a period of ill health he was persuaded by his employers to apply for early retirement, but in September 1992 sought to withdraw his application. But he says the trust refused to accept his withdrawal and purported to terminate his employment from 31 October 1992. An appeal to the Health Secretary against this decision was dismissed, but his notice period was extended to 25 February 1994. Whitelaw claims that despite this decision, the trust has failed to pay him since 31 October 1992 and he is owed a total of u87,239 for salary, London weighting, domiciliary visits, and superannuation for the period between 31 October 1992 and 25 February 1994.

The London Borough of Southwark is suing one of its finance officers over alleged misappropriation of more than u2,000. It alleges that Selwyn Smart, whose duty was to oversee the payment of bills, misappropriated u2,880 between 15 September and 7 October 1993. Smart is also accused of failing to return computer equipment to the council.

A couple who say they were given false information about a planned housing development when they bought their farmhouse home in 1992 are to seek compensation. Simon and Claire Taylor, of Astwood Bank, Worcestershire, are suing Wood-Ast Farms Ltd, of Upper Berrow Farm, Berrow Hill, Feckenham, Redditch, Worcestershire, for alleged misrepresentation and breach of covenant. They claim the company did not reveal before they bought their house that it planned to build 87 homes on adjoining land. Among other things they claim they have also lost the amenity of a swimming pool and tennis court, which were in a state of disrepair when they bought the property. They say they do not plan to repair the pool or tennis court until they know the impact of the planned development.
