Linklaters in international launch of ‘volunteer days’

Linklaters has taken the lead from investment banking clients, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, to become what is believed to be the first UK law firm to introduce a ‘volunteer day’ across its international network.

The initiative, dubbed ‘Time to Volunteer’, will see all Linklaters staff, including partners, fee-earners and support staff, offered an additional day’s leave each year for voluntary work.

The scheme was launched last week in the magic circle firm’s London office, but the firm plans to roll out the programme across all of its 23 international offices by the end of the current financial year
Senior partner Anthony Cann and managing partner Tony Angel spearheaded the initiative after promptings from clients. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan already operate similar schemes.

Partner Christopher Coombe said: “The scheme has been enthusiastically adopted by the entire management committee. It’s a plank of our international strategy.”

Although yet to determine the cost of the initiative, Linklaters last year undertook an estimated £1m worth of pro bono and community work. Coombe said that figure could double under the new initiative.

“We see quality altruism as good for business and good for our people,” said Coombe.
