Samsung appoints European GC to create centralised commandKorean technology company Samsung Electronics has created the position of European general counsel, hiring Jeremy Shewring from French IT provider Steria to fill the post.

Shewring will be responsible for growing Samsung’s European legal team in
both Western and Eastern Europe, excluding Russia, as well as bringing the group together under central ­command for the first time.

Before Samsung created the general counsel role, Eversheds associate John Benjamin had filled in as a coordinator ;for ;the ­European legal team while on a secondment that began in February this year.

Benjamin said that as general counsel Shewring will have greater responsibility, adding: “He’s going to be looking after the European legal ;department ;and ­bringing it all together. The plan is to hire various ­subsidiary lawyers and make the group more cohesive.”

Samsung currently has a total of 14 in-house lawyers in Europe, with Benjamin now set to return to Eversheds – one of Samsung’s main external firms in Europe – after Shewring takes over this week.

Shewring has wide-­ranging experience of the technology sector, having previously worked for ­Ericsson and NEC.
