Making sport of death

An amusing but cautionary tale from the US reached Tulkinghorn last week. Pierce County Superior Court judge Beverly Grant was presiding over a manslaughter sentencing hearing in which one Steve Keo Teang, charged with shooting Tino Patricelli during a fight outside a tavern, was awaiting his fate.

Teang was eventually sentenced to 13 years and six months in chokey, but not before Grant made an ill-advised attempt to lighten up the proceedings. She decided the time was right to lead the assembled throng in a pre-Superbowl cheer on behalf of the Seattle Seahawks. Apparently, it went something like “Go Seahawks!”.

Grant later apologised, saying she took full responsibility, “particularly as it has impacted the Patricelli family, the judiciary system and others”. Sadly, the Seahawks still lost.
