Lord Justice Collins and Sir Brian Kerr have been appointed Law Lords and will serve the new Supreme Court when it launches later this year.

They will replace retiring judges Lord Hoffmann and Lord Carswell, who stand down in April and June respectively. Collins LJ, a former solicitor who is qualified as a solicitor-advocate, was appointed to the High Court in 2000 and the Court of Appeal in 2007.

Kerr is Lord Chief Justice of ­Northern Ireland. He was called to the bar in 1974 and was appointed a High Court judge in Northern Ireland in 1993. The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom will be launched in ­October 2009.
